Guest Post: Skyping with 4KM and 4KJ

Guest Post by Mia, Ellie, and Maya

Today, we Skyped with our Australian friends! We learned a lot through asking questions and getting answers. It was Thursday afternoon in America, and it was Friday morning in Australia!

Here are both of our flags from our countries,  United States of America (U.S.A) and Australia.

This is a picture of Mia typing the notes in a Word document. It is a little blurry, but it shows a lot of action. Mia, Ellie, and Maya were the typists.

Here is a Google Doc with the transcript.

We prepared one question, but then we realized that we were supposed to ask multiple questions.  We adapted quickly, and we came up with new questions.   It was easy to come up with questions because we wanted to know a lot about 4KM and 4KJ. It was very hard to type because some people talked so fast.

Below is a chart of the interviewees. (An interviewee is a person being interviewed.) Sarah was the first Yollis student to be asked questions. We called it the hot seat and the names are shown below in green.  The names in brown are the interviewers. (An interviewer is a person who asks questions.)  Kelly asked the first series of questions.

After all the questions were asked, we had some free time. 4KM and 4KJ sang the Australian National Anthem. Here is a video!

Sarah played the Star Spangled Banner on her violin. (She sounded very good).

Here is a video of Sarah practicing the Star Spangled Banner before the call. Beverly really enjoyed it!

Here are Mrs. Morris, Miss Jordan, and the 4KM/4KJ class mascot,  Leo!   We have Beverly and Panda as mascots, and they have Leo.
(We have a puppet that looks exactly like Leo, but a girl.  Her name is Lia!)

The bell rang and most of the class had to go. However, a few students stayed and recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

4KM and 4KJ recited their school oath.

Thank you, Sasha, for the fabulous photos!

What was your favorite question?

  1. Dear Mrs Yollis and class,

How wonderful that were able to skype with your blogging pals once again. :)

I have skyped before and it was with Mrs Yollis about a few years ago. Mrs MOrris and Miss Jordan organized it which was heaps of fun for the children and I have to admit for me too. :)
Maybe I need to learn how to set up skype and get skyping with some of the wonderful friendships I have made because of blogging.

I don't have a favourite question as feel all your question were great.

    Happy Blogging everyone.

    From AA.

  2. Dear Sarah,

Thank you playing the violin. I really enjoyed watching and listening you play. I agree with Mrs Yollis in the back ground when she said beautiful.

So all the way from down under beautiful and bravo!

    Dear Sasha,

Well done to you too Sasha what an outstanding job you did taking those great photos.
You sure do have a talent for taking great photos, for I know to take a good photo it requires skill and timing which you have got.

I have to admit I am hopeless at taking photos for I tend to cut off heads and legs all in one shot. So I am never given a camera.

    From your pal,
    AA.

    1. Dear AA,

Thank you so much for listening to me play. You are always leaving many lovely comments. It is nice to hear your national anthem. I read that your national anthem was adopted only in 1984. Do you sing the anthem before sports games like basketball or football games?

      Sincerely,
      Sarah

  3. Dear Mrs Yollis and class,

Wow, what a wonderfully detailed and interesting post! Congratulations to Mia, Ellie and Maya for creating this post, I am so impressed!

I really enjoyed reading your transcript on the Google Doc. You girls did a terrific job typing all the questions and answers - that is a tough job! You must have very good typing skills.

The skype call was lots of fun and I really enjoyed hearing the answers from the students in your class. Comparing life in Australia and the USA is a great way to learn about each other's lives.

Using skype is also a good way to improve speaking and listening skills, as you have to speak clearly and listen carefully to respond.

Well done to all of the interviewers and interviewees, and also to the other students who had special jobs. I thoroughly enjoyed our discussions yesterday!

    Your friend,
    Miss Jordan

    1. Dear Miss Jordan,

I treasured the skype call. It was so fun to be interviewed by someone in a different country. I liked typing the word document, but it was hard because some people were talking to fast.

I liked when you only had one minute to answer the question. I agree learning about each other lives. Comparing life to Australia ans the USA is very different.

I have some questions for your class:

What is your favorite wild animal? Mine is a dog which is almost the same as a dingo, but not wild.

Do you like ice cream? Why? How many people? I love all ice cream.

Do any of you have a pet or pets? How many people? I have a dog. I used to have another dog, but it ran away. I am saving up to buy a new dog.

Whats your favorite movies? Mine are Avatar, Tangled, Puss In Boots, Shout and lots of other kinds. My dad was one of the main characters of Shout.

Have any of you seen a wild animal? How many people? I have seen coyotes, deer, and bears.

What is your favorite food? I love chocolate.
      See you in blogging.

      Best wishes,
      ♥Ell♥e♥

  4. Dear Mia, Ellie and Maya,

I got so carried with your wonderful post that I somehow didn't write it in my comment sorry!

  5. Dear Mia, Maya, Ellie and class,

Well done on a fabulous post! It is so detailed and interesting. In fact, if you hadn't have said it was a guest post I would have thought Mrs Yollis wrote it.

Like Miss Jordan, I enjoyed the Google Doc. Do you still use Alpha Smarts to improve your typing skills? You must be great typists if you could get all that information down!

It's very sad that our time zones don't work out to Skype now. My students love learning with you!

    Best wishes,
    Mrs M☀rris

    1. Dear Mrs. Morris,

Thank you for the comment. It was really fun Skypeing with you.

Yes, we still do AlphaSmarts I am on c,. Which is a level after x., so I can type my grammar homework. Have you ever heard of AlphaSmart from someone besides us?

Maybe we can Skype with you next year when I am in fourth grade and I can visit Mrs. Yollis' class.

      You blogging buddy,

  6. Hello Mrs. Yollis and class,

What an opportunity it is when two classes from so far apart are able to share a lesson together. When I look back to the first class I taught, we only had one television channel if the weather was okay and shared one computer with five other small schools when computers first started being used in schools. Now, we can sit in classrooms on opposite sides of the world and have fun together.

It impresses me how well organised you all are in Skype sessions. You have people typing notes, questions prepared and you had a hot seat for the person being interviewed. To finish this off you were able to have free time to include a song and a violin recital of songs important to each country. I have heard the Australian National Anthem sung many times and also heard the Star Spangled Banner sung but it’s the first time I have heard it played by a violin soloist. Well done, Sarah. ☺

Have you ever Skyped with someone from a different country?
I haven’t as yet Skyped with anyone but I have recently set up an account so this might happen one day.

    What was your favorite question?
Not having seen the session, I can only choose from the pictured questions. I like the pet question.
Did any of you wonder if someone would say kangaroos are popular pets?
Believe it or not, for a short time I did have a young kangaroo in my care. Its mother had been killed by a car. I decided its best chance would be in a city called Dubbo’s Western Plains Zoo. As this was a four hour drive from my school, I had to wait till the weekend to take it. I don’t think it really liked me looking after it because it would kick me with its feet when I approached. ☺ It liked its new home with other kangaroos.
